A fast-growing wildfire in Mendocino County has exploded past 1,000 acres, forcing mass evacuations across Northern California.
The blaze, dubbed the Feliz Fire, erupted near the Lake County and Mendocino County line in Potter Valley, according to CalFire. Officials issued urgent evacuation orders for several communities as flames spread rapidly through the region.
Containment stood at just 5 percent as of Friday morning, leaving the vast majority of the fire perimeter unchecked. Crews faced difficult conditions as the flames pushed through dry vegetation in the area.
Evacuation orders covered multiple areas near the county border, displacing residents from their homes with little warning. The speed of the fire’s growth caught many in the region off guard.
California has seen an early start to its fire season, with multiple blazes already forcing evacuations across the state this year. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency earlier this week as separate fires raged in Southern California.
The Sandy Fire outside Los Angeles County has grown to more than 1,300 acres, forcing the evacuation of over 10,000 homes as Southern California firefighters battle the first major blaze of the year.
The Feliz Fire adds to a growing crisis across the U.S. West, where drought conditions and warm temperatures have created dangerous fire weather. Multiple states are currently grappling with large active blazes.
In Georgia, dozens of homes have been destroyed as wildfires forced evacuations and sent smoke drifting into metro Atlanta. The fires there have burned thousands of acres in recent days.
Canadian wildfires have also exploded in size, sending smoke southward and putting millions of Americans at risk of poor air quality. Maps of the affected regions show a broad swath of the northern United States under threat.
Fire officials have not yet provided estimates for full containment of the Mendocino County blaze. The combination of steep terrain, dry fuels, and shifting winds has complicated suppression efforts.
CalFire continues to monitor conditions and adjust evacuation orders as the situation develops. Residents in surrounding areas have been advised to remain prepared for potential expansion of the evacuation zone.
