Ford Motor Company is recalling more than half a million Broncos due to a serious risk of engine fires, marking one of the largest safety campaigns for the popular SUV line. The recall affects 565,691 Ford Broncos and Bronco Raptors from model years 2021 through 2026.
The issue stems from a wiring harness in the engine compartment that can short circuit and ignite flammable materials. Movement between the engine compartment wiring harness and surrounding components causes wear that can damage the protective covering. Over time, this exposes internal wires and creates intermittent electrical shorts capable of igniting nearby flammable materials.
The problem originated when Ford’s Critical Concern Group launched an investigation into reports of Bronco engine fires. Engineers identified similar issues in both standard Broncos and the high-performance Bronco Raptor models. Through its investigation, Ford identified 15 total fires: seven involving Bronco Raptors and eight involving regular Broncos, all reportedly starting on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
During the investigation, Ford inspected more than 80 vehicles and found evidence of rubbing and wear on wiring harness coverings. The automaker estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles have the actual defect, though all 565,691 vehicles from the affected model years are included in the precautionary recall.
If a short occurs, drivers may first notice warning signs. They could see smoke appearing in the air vents or receive a warning message on their dashboard. In more serious cases, flames may appear coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue, though the fire risk clearly posed a serious safety concern. The recall was announced on July 20 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with the automaker officially announcing the action to the public on Thursday.
To remedy the defect, Ford will install new protective covers over the wiring harness at no cost to owners. The repair involves adding sheathing that provides better protection for the wiring. Ford’s recall number for this campaign is 26S55.
Notification letters to affected vehicle owners will begin arriving on August 24. Owners can contact their local Ford dealership to schedule an appointment for the free repair.
