Will Reeve announced Tuesday that he is now cancer-free after a months-long battle with testicular cancer.
The 34-year-old ABC News correspondent, son of late “Superman” star Christopher Reeve, shared the news on “Good Morning America,” telling viewers “right off the top” that he is “OK” following treatment over the summer. Reeve underwent surgery, a second operation to remove lymph nodes, and chemotherapy after discovering a lump just months into his marriage.
“The diagnosis was a shock and the treatments were a slog,” he said on the broadcast. “Today, though, I am relieved to announce that we arrived at our destination and this cancer is in the rearview mirror. But what a journey.”
Reeve said that he found “a hard, tender lump in my left testicle” only three months after his January wedding to Amanda Dubin in Miami. He went in for an ultrasound “at Amanda’s urging,” and “the images confirmed the unimaginable” — he “had a mass that had to come out.”
In May, Reeve had an orchiectomy to remove the affected testicle. What he initially believed would be a “momentary frightening detour” grew more serious when doctors diagnosed him with embryonal carcinoma, an aggressive form of the disease. The diagnosis led to a second surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering to remove dozens of lymph nodes from his abdomen, a step taken to prevent the cancer from spreading.
The New York hospital carries painful family history: Reeve’s mother, Dana Reeve, died of lung cancer there in 2006 at 44, two years after Christopher Reeve’s death at 52.
Reeve chose to undergo chemotherapy to cut his chances of recurrence, enduring ringing ears, night sweats, blood clots, constant headaches and bone pain. He preserved his hair through cold-capping and banked sperm so he and Dubin can pursue in vitro fertilization to start a family.
Dubin called her husband’s cancer battle “early validation” that the couple can “tackle anything” together. Reeve, in turn, praised his wife as his “caregiver,” drawing a parallel to his mother, who cared for Christopher Reeve after a 1995 horse-riding accident left the actor paralyzed.
“I learn[ed] more about what it was like to be my dad in the final nine years of his life, where he had my mom and our family taking care of him,” Reeve said. He added that his parents taught him how to take adversity and “repurpose it into something hopeful.”
Reeve received “clean scans” on Sept. 8, he shared on “GMA.” In his interview, he stressed the importance of early detection while reflecting on the ordeal.
“I’m fortunate that I caught this early,” he said. “Yes, I had to jump through some flaming hoops to get to the other side, but it could have been much worse had I ignored it or delayed going to the doctor.”
Reeve and Dubin went public with their relationship in April 2023, became engaged in November 2024, and married in Miami this past January.
Reeve is expected to return to his regular correspondent duties on “Good Morning America.”
