When a 20-year-old man came down with appendicitis last October, he required simple surgery to remove his appendix. Weeks later, when he received his bill, he was absolutely dumbfounded by the amount of money he apparently owed. Completely in shock, he posted a copy of the bill to Reddit and it immediately when viral. Take a look at this outrageous bill:

The charges, in total, were greater than $55,000. That insane price was reduced to $11,000 after his insurance kicked in, but that is still an outrageous amount to pay.
The two mandatory hours he spent in the recovery room cost him $7,500. That’s just shameful and wrong.
The surgery itself cost a whopping $16,000. That’s more than some people pay for a year’s worth of college.
Needless to say, the bill caused quite an uproar around the world. Patients from different countries with much better medical systems compared their experiences with his. The results were shocking.
This Australian who needed the same surgery wasn’t even sent a bill.
This Canadian’s mother was charged only $60 for foot surgery because she wanted cable access in her hospital room.
In the US, getting cancer could bankrupt you at 24 years old.
In this extreme case, this guy’s cousin died because he had reached his “lifetime limit”.
This mother got slapped with a $2,000 bill for one night’s stay, a pill and a juicebox.
Needless to say, healthcare in the US is one giant mess. Have you had a similar experience?
