A Berlin woman survived a death-defying leap from an 11th-floor window Friday morning, landing in a firefighter’s rescue bucket as flames engulfed her high-rise apartment building.
The woman, whose name has not been released, dangled from her window in the Friedrichshain district as smoke and fire billowed from the unit beside her, according to footage shared by the Berlin fire department on Twitter. A firefighter positioned on an aerial platform two floors below urged her to make the jump onto the roughly 1-2 square meter rescue bucket.
“Dramatischer Rettungseinsatz bei einem Hochhausbrand am heutigen Morgen in Berlin-Friedrichshain,” the Berlin fire department wrote on Twitter, sharing the harrowing video. “Da die Drehleiter nur bis zum 9. Stock reichte, musste diese Frau vom 11. Stock aus in den etwa 1-2 m² großen Drehleiterkorb springen.”
Smoke and flames crept closer to the woman as she hesitated at the ledge, the footage shows. She finally took the leap of faith, plummeting toward the outstretched arms of the waiting firefighter below.
She landed safely in the rescue bucket before the platform was lowered to the ground, according to the video and reports. The precision of the catch drew widespread amazement online as the clip spread across social media platforms.
Thirteen people suffered minor injuries in the blaze, according to reports from the scene. The fire department did not specify the nature of the injuries or whether the rescued woman was among those hurt.
First responders brought the fire under control in fewer than three hours, officials said. The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Friday.
The rescue highlighted the extreme challenges firefighters face when aerial ladders cannot reach upper floors of high-rise structures. The department’s ladder extended only to the 9th floor, leaving a two-floor gap that required the woman to make a calculated jump into a target roughly the size of a small bathroom.

The leap itself appears to cover approximately 20 feet of vertical distance, with the woman landing in a crouched position inside the bucket before collapsing against its edge.
The Friedrichshain neighborhood, located in Berlin’s eastern district, has seen several high-profile fires in recent years amid ongoing debates about building safety standards in the German capital.
Berlin fire officials have not announced whether they will conduct a formal review of the rescue techniques employed during the incident.
