HGTV Stars Ben and Erin Napier Detail Their Marital Problems and What Makes Her Jealous

Ben and Erin Napier have opened up about the only “problem” that surfaces in their nearly 18-year marriage.

The HGTV stars, who have been together since 2004, told “Talk To Me: The Debra Fileta Podcast” on Tuesday that separation — even brief — is what strains their relationship. Ben Napier, 43, said the issue has cropped up only “a handful of times” when they’ve spent more than two nights apart.

The “Home Town” hosts stay in constant contact when distance forces them apart. “It’s, ‘Hey, why didn’t you answer when I called you? Because I was busy, what’s wrong? Why was that so important that you needed me to answer right away?'” Ben shared. “You know? It’s that.”

Erin Napier, 41, agreed that the college sweethearts are “hardly ever” apart. She added that the couple “really can’t function separately,” a dynamic that extends to their two daughters, Helen, 8, and Mae, 5.

“They can’t function” with just one parent at a time, Erin explained. “They like it to be both of us all the time.” She revealed that when Ben recently “went away for one night,” their children “acted like he had passed away.”

Ben traced their interdependence back to their earliest days as a couple. “We’ve always worked together, and we don’t know how to do it any other way,” he said. He noted that interviewers frequently ask how they tolerate working alongside each other, a question he finds telling. “And to me, that’s more of a sign of, like, ‘Something’s up if you can’t stand to be with your spouse all day.'”

Erin offered a rare admission of jealousy within the marriage, though not the kind that signals trouble. She said Ben’s intense focus on other people’s needs — sometimes above his own — is a trait she envies. “It’s not for me. It’s not for me at all,” she said. “I’m jealous of him.”

Ben responded simply: “That’s why we’re a good fit.”

Erin has spoken before about how her parents warmed to Ben in ways they hadn’t with her previous boyfriends. She said her mother and father “loved him immediately” and thought he was “wonderful,” a contrast to the “chillier receptions” her exes received.

In a recent social media tribute to her husband, Erin wrote that if she ever “lost” Ben, he’d be “100% irreplaceable,” She continued: “There is not another man anything like him, and I think about this often.”

The Napiers have built their brand and family life around constant proximity, turning what might strain other couples into the foundation of their bond. Their daughters appear to have inherited the same preference for togetherness, treating even a single night of separation as a crisis.

The couple’s working relationship began in their college years at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi before they transferred to the University of Mississippi together. They married in 2008 and launched “Home Town” on HGTV in 2016, renovating houses in their native Laurel, Mississippi.

Their on-screen partnership and off-screen marriage have remained inseparable, with neither showing interest in pursuing solo projects. The podcast appearance marked a rare instance of the couple discussing their relationship dynamics directly rather than through the lens of home renovation.

Erin’s public tribute to Ben underscores the depth of their attachment, framed not in romantic clichés but in the language of irreplaceability. Her acknowledgment that she “think[s] about this often” suggests an awareness of how unusual their closeness might appear to outsiders.

The Napiers’ daughters have shown their own signs of sibling tension. In a separate recent interview, the couple noted that Mae, 5, and Helen, 8, remain jealous of each other, with Erin specifying that “Mae only bites Helen” — a detail that places the children’s behavior in familiar younger-sibling territory even as the family unit as a whole clings together.
