A homeless outreach worker has been dispatched to a Brentwood bus shelter after a man was found camped on its roof with a shopping cart and personal belongings.
The encampment, perched above the regularly used stop at S. Barrington Ave. And Wilshire Blvd., was captured in KTLA video showing the man lying on the structure with his possessions nearby. Councilmember Traci Park’s office confirmed to KTLA that it sent a homeless outreach worker to assess the situation after learning of the camp. City workers were also observed at the upscale intersection.
Metro, the regional transit agency, clarified to KTLA that most Los Angeles bus stops are city-owned and maintained, placing the structure outside its jurisdiction.
The discovery surfaces as Los Angeles grapples with persistent homelessness ahead of the mayoral election pitting Mayor Karen Bass against Councilmember Nithya Raman. The city has poured substantial resources into addressing the crisis. The Los Angeles Times reported in a recent analysis that Los Angeles has spent $300 million since 2022 on Inside Safe, its flagship homelessness program. About 40 percent of people housed through the initiative later returned to homelessness, the analysis found.
California’s latest count puts roughly 187,000 people experiencing homelessness statewide, with approximately 45,000 of them in Los Angeles city limits. The Brentwood sighting is not the first unusual encampment to draw attention. KTLA has previously reported on people living in city storm drains near the 110 Freeway.
The Brentwood intersection sits in one of the city’s wealthier districts, where the visibility of such encampments often intensifies local pressure for rapid response. Park’s office did not specify what immediate actions might follow the outreach worker’s assessment.
