Alyne Espinal, 46, was found stabbed to death in her Somerville home last Thursday.
Her husband, Ignacio Espinal, 55, was arrested Tuesday in West New York, New Jersey, authorities confirmed.
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:30 p.m. On August 7.
The caller reported concerns for the welfare of a woman living on Brookside Avenue.
Responding officers discovered Espinal with multiple lacerations to her chest, neck and thigh.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement on the ongoing investigation.
“The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation,” the office said, “which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records and analyze forensic evidence.”
Espinal is facing charges of first-degree murder.
He also faces third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Additionally, he was charged with third-degree hindering.
The arrest came five days after the fatal stabbing.
Authorities tracked Espinal to West New York, roughly 35 miles from the crime scene.
Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing.
The couple’s Brookside Avenue residence sits in a quiet suburban neighborhood.
Neighbors expressed shock at the violence in their community.
The case marks the second high-profile killing of a woman in the region this summer.
In June, Brooke Hanlon, 35, was found dead in her Chester home about 15 miles away.
That case remains unsolved, with no arrests made.
Hanlon’s husband, Conor Hanlon, has not been charged.
He had worked at a Somerville construction contractor less than a mile from the Espinal residence.
Authorities emphasized the two cases are unrelated.
