Influencer trapped on cruise ship during ongoing Hantavirus outbreak details the ‘hardest part’ of situation

A travel influencer stranded on a cruise ship amid a deadly hantavirus outbreak has shared an emotional update.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that several people aboard the MV Hondius, currently in the Atlantic Ocean, had died from what is believed to be a hantavirus infection.

So far, at least three passengers are reported to have died, with seven cases identified in total.

With the situation still unfolding, those on board have not yet been permitted to disembark.

Among the passengers is travel influencer Jake Rosmarin, who posted to Instagram to keep followers informed about what’s happening.

“I normally wouldn’t make a video like this,” he began. “But I feel like I need to say something, so I’ve written a few things down.”

Speaking through tears, Jake said the reality on the ship is overwhelming and deeply personal for everyone involved.

“We’re not just a story. We’re not just headlines. We’re people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home,” he said.

Explaining what he’s finding most difficult, Jake added: “There’s a lot of uncertainty, and that’s the hardest part. All we want now is to feel safe, have clarity, and to get home.”

He also urged anyone following the news to remember the human side of the situation, stressing that those affected are not distant figures but real people living through it.

“I’ll share more when I can, but for now I just ask for your kindness and understanding,” he concluded. “Thank you.”

In the video caption, he added: “I also want to acknowledge that Oceanwide Expeditions and the entire crew onboard have been handling this situation to the best of their ability, and I’m very grateful for their efforts throughout.”

His followers responded with messages of support, including one who wrote: “Sending you Prayers for a safe, virus free trip and return home.” Another commented: “Be strong, everything will pass.”

A third added: “I’m praying for you Jake and everyone aboard the ship!”

“Hantavirus is a group of viruses carried by rodents that can cause severe disease in humans,” WHO states. The illness is typically transmitted through contact with rodents and can lead to serious complications, including death in severe cases.

The vessel departed on an expedition voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde on April 1. A Dutch passenger died a little over three weeks after embarking, and it has also been confirmed that a British crew member is being prepared for medical evacuation from the ship for ‘urgent’ treatment.
