Rescuing retired battery hens and giving them a new home is one thing, but Nicola Congdon, aged 25, from Cornwall, UK, has found a unique way of offering her feathered friends a little extra comfort.

Nicola found that her ex-battery hens struggled to acclimatise to colder weather after years in a controlled, factory environment. Her solution? Knitting them teeny tiny chicken sweaters.
For the last six months, Nicola and Ann have been busy knitting jumpers for 30 plucky hens and, according to Nicola, “they absolutely love it.” We bet they feel like the cock of the walk.
Nicola told SWNS TV: “It’s important to make people aware of the poor conditions the hens live in and the fact they have no feathers when they’re retired.”
“The tank tops are also something really different that provide some fun.” Plus, there’s no chance of fowl play for these hens: “They keep [the chickens] warm and easy to identify.”
Nicola and mother Ann, aka The Primrose Project, have had orders for their jumpers from all over the world. They ask for donations to a South African AIDS orphanage rather than payment.
We think the jumpers are clucking brilliant! You can order yours at the Primrose Project website and you can watch the full interview with Nicola below:
