Jennifer Lawrence sought advice from her friend Adele but later regretted not heeding it.
Adele, known for her hit “Rolling in the Deep,” has a plethora of celebrity friends. Among those she has befriended since moving from the UK to sunny California are Nicole Ricci, Emma Stone, John Mayer, and Cameron Diaz.
Another notable friendship Adele has developed is with Jennifer Lawrence. The two are reportedly so close that Lawrence sought Adele’s opinion on whether she should accept a particular movie role.
The movie in question was 2016’s “Passengers,” in which Lawrence played the character Aurora.
Chris Pratt featured as her romantic interest Jim, with the storyline unfolding on a spaceship traveling to ‘Homestead II’.
The film’s premise is: “During a voyage to a distant planet, Jim’s hypersleep pod malfunctions which wakes him up. So, he and fellow passenger work together to prevent their spaceship from meeting with a disaster.”
The movie “Passengers” received a low 30 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Lawrence has expressed regret over not following Adele’s advice.
Despite its lukewarm reception, the film earned $300 million globally, against a production budget of $110 million.
In an interview with The New York Times, Lawrence discussed how she ended up involved in less-successful projects after “The Hunger Games.”
Reflecting on her fans’ disappointment with her underperforming films, she admitted, “I was like, ‘Oh no, you guys are here because I’m here, and I’m here because you’re here. Wait, who decided that this was a good movie?'”
Using “Passengers” as an example, she continued: “Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.'”
“I should have listened to her,” Lawrence confessed.
Lawrence later acknowledged that it seemed people were growing ‘tired’ of her.
“I was not delivering the quality that I should have. I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me,” she revealed.
“It had just reached a point where I felt I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?'”
Despite her self-criticism, Lawrence’s accolades, which include three Golden Globes, two SAG awards, and an Academy Award, indicate that audiences still appreciate her work.
