Apparently, it has something to do with how your brain interprets the light coming into your eyes or something. There’s some science behind it, but we’re too lazy to go and look.
But what’s really taken the whole thing to a next level of weird — apart from the totally unexpected hype — is the fact that a 24 year-old man from Texas named Daniel Howland just got the dress tattooed on his leg. His reason? “Because it’s stupid.” His words, not ours.

As the man himself explained in more detail: “I pretty much got it because, I mean, I keep up with all the social memes and hysteria and whatever, and this is the only one that I really couldn’t wrap my brain around. So I just decided to do it. It is a stupid tattoo. That’s why it’s funny. Because it’s stupid.”
