8 Amazing Home Experiments To Get Any Kid Excited About Science

#1. Egg in a bottle.

Is it possible to squeeze an egg into a bottle? Thanks to magic science, yes! First, boil the egg and remove the shell. Smear vegetable oil around the neck of the bottle before lighting a thin strip of paper on fire and dropping it into the bottle.

Place the egg on top of the bottle and watch it get sucked inside as the flame uses up all the oxygen in the bottle and lowers the air pressure, sucking in the egg.

#2. The classic Coke-and-Mentos experiment.

Drop around five Mentos into a two-litre bottle of coke for a serious explosion as the sweets free up the Coke’s carbon dioxide gas. Mess and excitement guaranteed.

Make sure you do it outside to avoid this.

#3. Crazy foam.

Combine 6% hydrogen peroxide, a little soap or washing up liquid and food coloring in a bottle. Separately, mix warm water and yeast before adding the yeast to the first bottle.

As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down into water and oxygen by the yeast,  you get big, colorful foamy fun.

#4. Puffy paint.

Mix one table spoon of pancake mix and one of salt in a cup and add water and the paint color of your choice. Repeat with different colors for a full puffy paint palette.

Paint as usual and then pop it in the microwave for 4-5 minutes, resulting in a colorful 3D artwork.

#5. Ice gems.

Freeze ice cubes or water in a freezable cup or bowl the night before. When it’s painting time, mix a salt solution and add some paint or food coloring to it. Using a pipette or a teaspoon, drop the colored salt solution onto the ice.

The salt will dissolve the ice, creating little holes which will be filled with color as you paint.

#6. The shadowless match.

As fire doesn’t produce a shadow, lighting a match near a wall and shining a torch on it will show a mysteriously non-burning match shadow.

This is because light can pass through fire, unlike your hand or the matchstick.

#7. Indoor rain.

Pour water into a large clear container and use washing up liquid to create fluffy “clouds”. Use a pipetter or teaspoon to drop food coloring into the container and watch as rain falls from the soapy clouds.

#8. Dancing worms.

Mix two cups of corn starch with one cup of water and pour the mixture onto a tray, adding food coloring for the rainbow effect. Place the tray on a subwoofer, turn on some music and watch the paint go crazy!
