A lip reader has offered a possible explanation of what was being said during a couple’s on-camera row that ended up airing live during the World Cup.
Arguments between partners happen all the time, but most people would be horrified if one played out in front of a global television audience.
That appears to be what happened during South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup clash with South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico, when cameras caught a tense exchange between a couple in the stands.
The footage starts with a woman gesturing for the man beside her to put his phone away while she waved flags and cheered on South Africa.
She looked clearly frustrated, and the mood only seemed to worsen when the man handed the last of his food to another woman sitting next to him.
The clip quickly spread online, with plenty of viewers sharing their reactions to the awkward moment.
“How can I file a divorce for someone else?” the post stated.
“Mood went from 100 to 0 in a split second,” another posted.
A third added:
“Notice how he wasn’t having fun until he upset her?”
while a fourth quipped:
“I could feel her heart sink into her stomach, because I’m also a woman.”
After the video gained traction, some viewers began wondering what the pair may actually have been saying to each other during the June 24 match. Lip reader Nicola Hickling later shared her interpretation with the Daily Mail.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Hickling claimed the man said:
“There is nothing to see. The lads took pictures and sent them.”

According to Hickling, the woman then responded:
“Why are you looking?”
She said the man allegedly answered:
“I’m not looking at other women.”
The exchange then reportedly became even more uncomfortable, with Hickling claiming he went on to say:
“Maybe this is why I don’t mention things.”
The woman then replied:
“That’s enough,”
Hickling also alleged that the man told her to ‘shut up’, before she fired back once again, saying:
“I am sick of you always arguing.”
As with any lip-reading analysis, there is no way to know for certain whether that was the exact conversation, but if Hickling’s reading is accurate, it was clearly a heated moment.
South Africa’s 1-0 win over South Korea on June 24 also carried historic weight, as it secured Bafana Bafana a place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
The match was played at Monterrey Stadium during the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and the result added to one of South Africa’s biggest modern footballing milestones.
