Sonni Mason has spoken out after his Batman-clad chase went viral across the UK.
Mason, 25, a London-based cafe worker and creative, was celebrating a friend’s birthday in Norwich last Saturday when he spotted a purse snatching inside a nightclub. He was already wearing a full authentic Batman suit for the fancy-dress evening. His friends that night were dressed as Mr. Fantastic and Poison Ivy.
The trio alerted nearby police patrols before pursuing the thief through dark city streets. The fleeing man panicked at the sight of three superheroes in pursuit and tossed the woman’s bag atop a high flint wall along the perimeter of historic Norwich Cathedral. Mason scaled the towering stone structure in full cape and cowl, retrieved the bag, and returned it to its visibly relieved owner. Footage of the handoff later appeared on Mason’s TikTok account.
Mason was quick to reject comparisons to billionaire Bruce Wayne’s lifestyle. “I’m a bog-standard guy, to be honest,” he told reporters. “I currently work at a cafe, but I’m a creative at the core. I love films and have four or five years of experience in that industry.”
His motivation, he explained, came down to basic decency rather than any comic-book fantasy. “There’s not a lot of good things going on in the world,” Mason reflected. “At the time, being able to get someone’s bag back, make sure she could go home safe and see someone happy again felt good. Everyone needs a little bit of that in them. A little bit of Batman. You have to be brave, bold and kind.”
He added that the costume shouldn’t matter when someone needs help. “I would hope everyone else would do the same, whether or not they are wearing a cape or a cowl. I didn’t want to jump off rooftops or beat people up. I just want to make sure everyone else is all right. Sincerely, that’s what [Batman] is about. He’s a protector.”
Norfolk Constabulary confirmed the incident occurred during routine night-time economy patrols in the city. A police spokesperson stated that officers were approached on Saturday, September 19, by a member of the public requesting help to find a missing bag. “Following enquiries at the scene, the bag was located with all of its contents intact and subsequently returned to its owner,” the spokesperson said.
The episode began as an ordinary Saturday night celebration among friends in costume. The group had no intention of crime-fighting when they set out for the evening. The theft inside the nightclub changed that abruptly, transforming the fancy-dress outing into an unexpected pursuit through Norwich’s streets and ending with Mason’s wall-scaling retrieval.
Mason hopes the moment inspires broader action. “I just hope more people will be inspired to do the same if they see someone being mugged or feeling uncomfortable on a night out,” he said. “It shouldn’t take a superhero costume to make you want to do that.”
