After decades of uncertainty about who his biological father was, a man finally took a DNA test and discovered that his childhood best friend was actually his brother.
Graham Hearsey, from Kent, UK, decided to seek answers after being admitted to hospital in April 2026. For years, he had wondered whether the man who raised him was truly his biological dad.
The 60-year-old had grown up hearing rumours that the father of his childhood friend, David Joyce, was in fact his “real” father.
Although the two lost touch after their school days, Hearsey eventually found Joyce, now 59, on Indeed and sent him a message asking whether he would be willing to do a DNA test as well.
The result was something neither of them could have predicted.
After three weeks of waiting, David phoned him with the words, ‘hello, brother’.
More than 40 years after they had drifted apart, the former childhood friends were reunited in a completely new way — as siblings.
Hearsey, a carer, said:
“I really wanted to know the truth.”

Looking back on their younger years together, he said:
“David and I had a brilliant time. He lived on the next street. We both had ginger hair at the time. We were always in and out of trouble together.
“Eventually, we went our separate ways – David joined the army, and I got married.”
Hearsey also spoke about what it meant to finally learn the truth after spending most of his life not knowing who his brother really was.
“Having David, it’s amazing. It’s the best feeling – we cuddled and cried.
“It’s been accepted by both families. It’s been really nice.
“I contacted my sisters and said, ‘Dad’s not my dad. David’s dad is my dad’, and they were so understanding.”
He explained that his suspicions had been there since childhood, with one of the biggest reasons being his hair colour.

“There was always a slight suspicion, but my mum reassured my dad that I was his,” he said.
“When I was born, I had this ginger hair. My mum said that there’s a ginger child in every family.”
He added:
“My mum’s sister had a girl who was ginger, and her other sister had a boy who had ginger hair.
“She convinced him, and apparently, there was a letter she wrote to say that I was actually his.”
The revelation left Hearsey stunned.
He and David were born only three months apart, and he said the pair even “shared a cot” as babies.
Despite the shock, he has still found room for humour, joking:
“I need chase to him up for backdated Christmas and birthday presents,” he joked.
