Mariah Carey Loses Bid to Trademark ‘Queen of Christmas’

Mariah Carey won’t receive everything she wants for Christmas this year since her request to copyright the phrase “Queen of Christmas” was just rejected.

On Tuesday, the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board dismissed MC’s request to trademark “Queen of Christmas,” as well as her attempts to secure the rights to “Princess Christmas” and “Christmas Princess.”

As previously reported, Mariah Carey registered for the trademarks in March 2021 but swiftly encountered controversy.

Despite some backing, luminaries such as Darlene Love and vocalist Elizabeth Chan opposed MC — Elizabeth lodged an objection, stating that no one should “monopolize” the phrase “Christmas.”

Mariah’s registration stated that she intended to utilize the term for scents, lotions, nail paint, jewelry, cups, mugs, chocolate milk, coconut water… as well as decorations, toys, dog clothes, masks, lingerie, and sweatshirts.

Elizabeth says, “Christmas is a season of giving, not the season of taking, and it is wrong for an individual to attempt to own and monopolize a nickname like Queen of Christmas for the purposes of abject materialism.”
