Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans lambasted cancel culture, promising never to restrict his work or thoughts.
Wayans, 50, has appeared in films such as “White Chicks,” “Scary Movie,” “Requiem for a Dream,” and “Marmaduke.”
Wayans defended the comedy “White Chicks,” about two black FBI agents who go undercover as two white women.
When questioned if a film like “White Chicks” could “thrive” in today’s political atmosphere, Wayans said, “I think they’re required.”
“I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled,” he said. “If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor.”
Wayans has stated that he has no intention of listening to individuals who are concerned about how the awakened mob may react online.
“It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore,” Wayans continued. “I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people, these scared executives.”
Wayans stated that individuals who choose to edit their work to avoid offending others should be able to do so, and that if they like to earn more money by not caring and providing society with the politically incorrect comedy that it desires, they should “get on board.”
“Y’all do what you want to do? Great,” he said. “I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself. I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”
Wayans stated last year that it was time to develop a sequel to “White Chicks.”
“I think ‘White Chicks 2’ is necessary,” Wayans told Variety in an interview. “I think we’ve tightened up so much that we need to loosen our ties a bit and laugh a little bit.”
“I don’t think Hollywood understands what a juggernaut ‘White Chicks 2’ would be,” Wayans added. “And the world just keeps giving us more. ‘White Chicks 2’ is writing itself.”
