Meghan Markle Honors Queen With Meaningful Pearl Earrings

Royal mourning attire is subject to stringent rules, with black as a visual representation of loss, military emblems, and symbolic jewelry worn as a mark of respect.

The Duchess of Sussex borrowed a page from her sister-in-style law’s playbook during the Westminster Hall service, which marked Queen Elizabeth II’s last trip from Buckingham Palace before she lies in state ahead of the burial.

Meghan donned a set of traditional pearl and diamond stud earrings that Her Majesty gave to the former actor. At the same time, the new Princess of Wales wore pearl drop earrings that previously belonged to Princess Diana and the Queen’s diamond and pearl leaf brooch.

Following the passing of the Queen on September 8, Meghan’s whistle-stop European tour plans were abandoned. Meghan has supported The Firm in understated inky black separates dotted with classic Cartier and Jennifer Meyer pieces.

The Duchess could pay tribute to the previous queen without being overly flashy thanks to today’s earrings, which she complemented with an elegant veiled headpiece and boxy coat—a critical balance to strike when the whole world is watching.

The Sussexes and other royals gathered at Buckingham Palace last night to receive the Queen’s coffin before it was covered with the Royal Standard. The Imperial State Crown was set on top in preparation for today’s procession.

Along with dignitaries, leaders of state, and members of the general public who have flocked to Westminster Abbey in their millions to honor the family, Meghan and Harry will then pay their final respects to Her Majesty on September 19.

It could have been difficult for Meghan to abruptly shift into formal mode after leaving her position as a senior royal and moving to California.

The Duchess, however, was the epitome of composure and poise, wearing those particular earrings on her only solo engagement with the Queen in 2018.
