Michael J. Fox earned a prolonged standing ovation at Monday night’s Emmy Awards as he accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his decades of Parkinson’s disease advocacy.
The 63-year-old actor, who was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s in 1991 at age 29, took the stage with his wife Tracy Pollan, 64, marking the couple’s first appearance at the Emmys in 13 years. The honorary Emmy, presented by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, recognizes television-industry figures whose philanthropic work has made a lasting societal impact since its establishment in 2002.
Fox addressed the audience with unvarnished honesty about the early years of his diagnosis. “Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret,” he said on the Emmy Awards’ stage. “I worried that it would affect my work and my relationship with audiences.”
He pressed on with the fear that once haunted him. “Would they laugh if they knew I was sick?” Fox asked the crowd. “And then I was stunned by the support I got. The support from all of you. It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn’t lost what I do and they couldn’t take this away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it.”
The “Back to the Future” star publicly revealed his condition in 1998, seven years after his diagnosis, and has since become the face of Parkinson’s research fundraising through his foundation. During his acceptance speech, he shared an optimistic update on the scientific front, stating that researchers are “close” to finding a cure for the progressive nervous system disorder.

The standing ovation Fox received was not his first of the evening — audience members rose again as he concluded his remarks, a double ovation that underscored the industry’s deep respect for his transparency and persistence.
