Former first lady Michelle Obama challenged celebrities to round up a #VotingSquad, and several stars are responding to the call.
On Tuesday, Obama encouraged her followers on Twitter, saying they should “make a plan to vote.”
“We can’t let anyone sit this election out! Get your #VotingSquad together, make a plan to vote, and challenge three friends to do the same. I challenge my @WhenWeAllVote co-chairs to get their #VotingSquad,” she tweeted.
Her tweet also included a screen-shot of a group chat in which celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Tom Hanks, Chirs Paul, and Kerry Washington assured the former first lady that they were up for the challenge.
The challenge’s goal is to encourage American voters to take action and have their voices heard in the upcoming November 3rd presidential election. More than 6 million Americans in 27 states have already cast their ballots.
Additionally, Michelle Obama’s initiative, ‘When We All Vote,’ is teaming up with More Than A Vote led by NBA superstar LeBron James, to encourage more voters to vote early.
The organizations will hold events in major U.S. cities starting next week to “build momentum and excitement around voting early,” When We All Vote announced Tuesday.
The nonprofits will provide information, food, music, and personal protective equipment (PPE) in early voting sites across the United States from October 18-31. Obama, the co-chair of When We All Vote, said that making a plan to vote early is “critical.”
“It’s now up to us to do everything in our power to get our friends and family ready to vote early and safely together,” Obama said in a statement. “We can’t leave anyone behind. I’m proud of the work When We All Vote will do with More Than a Vote and our partners to help provide on-the-ground support for Americans who will cast their ballots early.”
The #VotingSquad trend is part of the larger When We All Vote organization launched by Obama and co-chairs Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Monáe, Paul, Hill, and McGraw in 2018.
