Mom faces backlash after using laser to remove baby’s birthmark

A mother has spoken out to defend her controversial decision to have her baby’s large facial birthmark removed through laser surgery after facing a sharp backlash online. Brooke, who shares content on her TikTok page @brookecyn, often features her son Kingsley, focusing on a noticeable birthmark that covered half of his face.

After consulting with healthcare professionals, Brooke chose to proceed with laser surgery to remove Kingsley’s ‘port-wine stain’ birthmark—a type of mark which, according to KidsHealth, tends to darken over time instead of fading. Brooke explained that her decision was motivated by a desire to prevent future complications for her son.

Despite her intentions, some social media users harshly criticized her actions, labeling her a ‘child abuser’ and questioning her decision. One individual expressed dismay, commenting, “Oh my Jesus Christ, how can you do that to him?” Another suggested, “I think this is just wrong, they should wait until he is 18 and can decide for himself if he wants it removed or not.”

Brooke, however, has firmly stood her ground, clarifying that her decision was not for cosmetic reasons. In a TikTok video that has amassed over 1.6 million views, she explained, “The reason we started so early with the laser is due to the fact it is a port-wine stain birthmark. Port-wine stain birthmarks do not fade, they do not disappear. They darken over time, they can progress and become lumpy and cause health issues. The younger they are the better it is to start the laser because it is fresh on their skin and it is less stubborn. Over time it will become more stubborn and they will need more sessions in the future.”

Brooke passionately added, “I think he is the most beautiful boy in the whole entire world. I don’t give a f**k if he has a birthmark on his face or not. It p*sses me off that people think this is purely for cosmetic purposes when it isn’t.”

Despite the severe criticism, other individuals on Facebook supported Brooke’s decision, emphasizing the benefits of addressing the birthmark at a young age. One person commented, “His skin will heal faster whilst still so young, and it’ll save him from the unkindness of children who don’t know better, and adults who should know better.” Another supporter stated, “She absolutely made the right choice because it’s her call. Her child will avoid years of bullying and possible health”,” while a third remarked, “She would have been criticized either way tbh. At least she did her due diligence and research before making a decision.”
