Mom Of Dying Teen Gets Arrested After Trying To Visit Him In A Hospital

A mother in York, Pennsylvania was arrested after allegedly causing disorderly conduct at a hospital where she was trying to visit her dying son.

Nylik Moore, 18, was shot in the chest and leg on Tuesday afternoon at a street near his home. His father called up his mother and told her what happened. She arrived at the scene of the crime only to be told that her son had been brought to a nearby hospital by an ambulance.

Cheirha Rankins, Moore’s mother, arrived at York Hospital but was told she couldn’t enter the premises due to a lockdown of the emergency room – which was standard operating procedure when a victim of a violent crime comes in.

She expressed that she was the mother of the dying boy but was only told that they couldn’t allow her to go inside. Anxious and distraught, the family members waited two hours outside the emergency department with the York City Police in tow.

As they were waiting, the crowd became disorderly and Rankins, among others, was arrested. Charges were dropped later on.

Moore was pronounced dead at York Hospital at 5:38 PM Tuesday. The autopsy showed that the teen had died because of a fatal gunshot wound to his back that pierced through his chest.

His mother wasn’t able to see her son that day and was not allowed to see his body even after three days.

The coroner’s office mentioned that in cases like this one, it’s routine to show the body of a deceased loved one to their family members to aid in the grieving process. Not allowing the family to see the body only adds additional trauma to the situation.

In the case of Moore, the deputy coroner was confused as to why the family was not allowed to see the body. “I’m not really sure what the difference was this time,” Pam Gay, the deputy coroner said. “It’s frustrating for us at all levels. I don’t know what happened in this instance.”

Shelly Buck, the hospital’s chief operating officer and chief nursing officer issued a statement in which she said, “It is always our goal to balance the needs and safety of our patients, family members and our staff during these times, unfortunately, we did not have a well-established process in place to ensure family access to their loved one during such a complex situation.”

But Rankins was not having any of it, she had only wanted to see her son. Investigation is currently being done on the incident.
