Rising costs of living are taking a toll on pet owners, as increasing inflation has caused some to surrender their four-legged friends to Kiya Koda Humane Society.
“People call us every day,” said Julie Skellenger, the shelter’s manager, “and before 11 a.m. today, we had already received three such requests.”
With this trend on the rise, the shelter is quickly running out of space to house the animals.
With a limited amount of space available, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa has noticed an increased number of dogs being dumped in Warren County.
According to Skelleneger, this is likely due to the economy and people being unable to afford the costs of owning a pet.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa stated that when the economy turns, pet owners often struggle with housing and veterinary costs which can be beyond their reach.
Additionally, Skelleneger noted an increase of pet owners coming in for help with food and supplies.
The animal shelter is seeing a rise in people who cannot afford to feed the pets they already own and are looking for help.
“They’re embarrassed and apologize for the situation,” said Skellenger, “so we help them out.”
The shelter, which has seen its vet bills increase to over $6,000 a month, is doing what it can to support those who can’t afford to feed their pets.
