It’s certainly not a surprise given how well-received the first season was by both reviewers and audiences. Still, Netflix is bringing Neil Gaiman’s adaption The Sandman back for additional episodes.
Deadline got the scoop on the news, noting that “the streamer is bringing back the comic book adaptation after various conflicting reports started to surface online.” Specifically, that refers to Wednesday’s apparently premature tweet from DC Comics (since deleted) that the trade says trumpeted “[The Sandman] will return with new episodes based on multiple volumes of the Neil Gaiman graphic novel to explore even more stories of the Endless”—as well as reports of the show’s cancellation that Gaiman himself called out as false.
So yet, no official statement from Netflix has been made, but io9 will keep you updated on The Sandman’s comeback as more information becomes available. Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and others feature in the 10-episode fantasy series (plus one extra episode!).
Netflix has issued a press release officially confirming that “more Sandman is on the way,” noting that “the Sandman world will continue to expand” and that “the iconic series will return with even more episodes and stories to be adapted from multiple Sandman graphic novels.” As of now, “episode count and story details are being kept under wraps.”
“Millions upon millions of people have welcomed, watched, and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from existing Sandman fans to those who were merely interested, and then grew obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family, and their goings-on,” Gaiman says. It brings me great pleasure to announce that Allan Heinberg, David Goyer, and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life in collaboration with Netflix and Warner Bros. There are some incredible stories in store for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody will be happier than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the greatest Sandman fans out there. It’s now time to get back to work. After all, there’s a family lunch to prepare. And Lucifer awaits Morpheus’ return to Hell…”
