Nicholas Hoult has exited HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” television series following fan backlash over his participation alongside author J.K. Rowling.
Hoult, 36, was set to portray the vain Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the streaming adaptation, but dropped out after some fans expressed disappointment with his choice to join the project. The casting had drawn criticism due to Rowling’s public statements on gender identity, which many have characterized as transphobic — a characterization the author has denied.
HBO has moved quickly to fill the vacancy. Kit Harington, the 38-year-old “Game of Thrones” veteran, has been announced as Hoult’s replacement for the role of the fraudulent Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Harington comes to the part with prior experience. He voiced Lockhart in the star-studded “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions” released late last year. Speaking with Audible at that time, he reflected on his lifelong connection to the franchise:
“I read it, and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years. I think there’s a little bit of Gilderoy in all of us.”
The casting shuffle marks the latest turbulence for HBO’s high-profile adaptation of the beloved fantasy property. The series has faced scrutiny from portions of its potential audience over Rowling’s continued creative involvement and public commentary on transgender issues.
Hoult’s departure follows a pattern of actors and creatives distancing themselves from Rowling-associated projects. The “Tab” and other outlets have previously noted performers who declined to participate in the “Harry Potter” reboot, while PinkNews reported fan disappointment when Hoult’s casting was initially announced.
The Lockhart recasting is not the only casting decision to generate intense reaction. Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, recently addressed the hostility he has faced, telling outlets that “nobody should face this for doing their job” after receiving death threats over his participation.
Hoult has not publicly addressed his exit through social media statements or interviews as of this report. Fan groups had previously distanced themselves from the actor when his casting was revealed coverage.
In the viral moment that established the pattern of backlash, Rowling’s social media posts and public statements on sex and gender identity beginning in 2019 have drawn sustained criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates and portions of the “Harry Potter” fan community.
