You’ve Never Seen Anything Like This Before: Nuns Growing Weed

Contents show

Not many women choose the life of a nun, after all, it takes immense discipline, dedication, belief, and apparently, a good knowledge of marijuana.

Meet The Sisters of the Valley, a group of nuns based in Merced, California.

They’re the subject of a fascinating photo series taken by photographers Shaughn Crawford and John DuBois.

Although the sisters are nuns, they’re not Catholic or traditionally religious.

But don’t you dare say they’re not ‘real nuns’: “When people say, ‘Well, they’re not real nuns,’ my answer is there are no nuns. They’re going extinct in this country,” Sister Kate told Tech Insider.

“If you look up what makes up a sister, there are five elements. … We live together, we wear the same clothes, we take a vow of obedience to the moon cycles, we take a vow of chastity (which we don’t think requires celibacy), and a vow of ecology, which is a vow to do no harm while you’re making your medicine.”

They cultivate weed according to the moon cycles before turning their harvest into healing remedies they sell online.

The organic products treat everything from back pain and migraines to hangovers.

In addition, the sisters bless each bottle and jar before shipping it for distribution.

But their way of life is under threat: despite being licensed medical marijuana growers, California is considering a cultivation ban that would make their enterprise illegal.

But these nuns plan to fight — after all, they have God on their side.
