Helsinki Young Offered Cheap Rent In Care Home If They Spend Time With Elderly Residents

Finnish capital Helsinki is offering cheap apartments in a care home to youngsters, provided they spend time with the elderly residents.

With studio apartments in Helsinki costing around €600 ($635), the scheme offers young people their own space for just €250 ($264).

The city council came up with the idea to house under-25s in care homes for cheap in order to combat the increasing problem of loneliness among the elderly.

The deal offers a 248 sq ft home with a private kitchen, bathroom, and balcony, if the resident spends 3 to 5 hours a week with their older neighbours.

There’s no experience necessary, the project’s manager tells Finnish broadcaster Yle, adding that “there are staff to look after the elderly.”

“We’re looking for young people who maybe have a different perspective on everyday life to bring variety and recreation to residents.”

So far, over 60 people have applied, but there’s only 3 flats available at the moment. The council are hoping to expand the scheme if the trial is a success.

The idea has received a big thumbs up from Finnish people for bringing generations together and tackling a shortage of affordable homes in Helsinki.

Well done, Helsinki.
