Friends fans have recently called for the removal of a particular scene from the show following Matthew Perry’s passing last year.
Perry is fondly remembered by millions for his spot-on portrayal of Chandler Bing in Friends.
The announcement of his passing last year deeply shocked Friends fans.
In October 2023, the 54-year-old was found deceased in a hot tub at his Los Angeles residence.
Two months later, the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that Perry had died due to ‘acute effects of ketamine,’ deeming the death accidental.
The autopsy further identified ‘drowning, coronary artery disease, and the opioid buprenorphine’ as contributors to his death, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
As a tribute to the joy he brought to the world, many fans began binge-watching the Friends series once more.
However, one particular scene began to make some fans uncomfortable, with some even describing it as rather ‘eerie’.
The scene in question is from episode 5 of the seventh season, which aired in 2000. It depicts Monica and Chandler attempting to take an engagement photo after getting engaged.
Chandler is unable to make a good face for the picture, smiling awkwardly, which frustrates Monica as she tries to get a decent smile from him.
She then remarks: “Chandler, what is the matter with your face. This picture is meant to say Geller and Bing to be married not local woman saves drowning moron.”
When the cameraman laughs, Monica snaps at him, saying: “Hey, don’t laugh at him, he is my drowning moron.”
On social media, some fans expressed that the joke now feels too close to reality.
“Could this scene BE any more eerie.” one person wrote.
“They gotta take this scene out of the show, man. They pretty much predicted the future,” wrote another.
“Nah they gotta cut this scene out now,” a third commented.
However, not everyone agreed, as some argued that the show should remain unchanged.
“Everyone saying delete this scene was too young or not even born when this scene happened… let the show stay how it was intended!” one person wrote.
“I think he would like it. He had the best sense of humor.” someone else said.
Following his death, Perry’s Friends co-stars paid tribute to him in a joint statement: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.
“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.
“In time we will say more, as and when we are able.
“For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”
