Philadelphia Gunman Ambushes Officers, Killing One and Critically Wounding Another

One Philadelphia police officer was killed and a second remains in critical condition after a gunman ambushed them on a West Philadelphia porch early Saturday.

The officers, 33 and 40 years old, had responded to a call about an armed man on the 100 block of North 52nd Street just after midnight, according to WPVI. The younger officer, a father of five, was struck by twelve gunshots. The second officer, a father of two, sustained three gunshot wounds.

Both men were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Police have not publicly confirmed which of the two officers died.

The gunman opened fire the moment the officers stepped onto the porch, hitting them with what authorities described as a hail of gunfire. The suspect then fled, continuing to shoot at police while running through a nearby alley before climbing a tree in an apparent attempt to hide.

A SWAT unit responded to the scene and the suspect ultimately surrendered, Fox 29 reported. Officers recovered three firearms from the incident: two handguns and a shotgun.

Neither the surviving officer nor the deceased has been identified by name. The suspect also remains unidentified pending further investigation.

The shooting marks another violent episode in a city grappling with multiple gun incidents. In separate events, Philadelphia police arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly shooting at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware that left one person dead and another injured, while a quadruple shooting in Wilmington claimed two lives and left two others in critical condition. A man was also killed and another wounded in a North Philadelphia shooting, according to NBC10 Philadelphia.

The 33-year-old officer leaves behind five children. The 40-year-old officer, fighting for his life, is a father of two.
