The jail bird was caught by guards at the La Reforma Penitentia, in San Jose, with 14 grams of cocaine and 14 grams of marijuana strapped to it in a little bag.
“It seems the dove was trained for it,” said prison director Paul Bertozzi.
This is not the first time an animal has been used to smuggle drugs, with previous attempts involving cats and an iguana.
The bird was “arrested” and caged. It is now at a zoological bird refuge.
The arrest prompted mass protests from Costa Rica’s pigeon population, who gathered in San Jose’s Plaza de la Cultura.
