A Florida couple discovered a stranger had been hiding beneath their bed throughout the night inside their locked hotel room, police confirmed.
The pair, who had checked into Provident Doral at approximately 9 a.m. Last Wednesday, were asleep with the blinds and rear sliding door closed when the intrusion began. Doral Police Department reports indicate the woman first sensed movement near the bed in the early morning hours, briefly waking before drifting back to sleep. At 6:30 a.m., she felt the disturbance again, this time clearly emanating from underneath the bed.
Approximately one hour later, she looked beneath the frame to retrieve misplaced items and came face-to-face with the source of the unsettling sensations. The man beneath the bed was identified by authorities as Ritchel Calvaire, 25, of North Miami. The couple immediately fled the room and alerted property security, after which a responding officer located Calvaire still concealed beneath the bed and placed him under arrest.
Police later confirmed that Calvaire had been a guest at the same hotel on two prior occasions, most recently checking out on August 31. Following that stay, he had allegedly been told not to return to the property. Despite this, he reportedly gained entry to the couple’s room by jumping over a balcony fence and slipping through the rear sliding glass door while the occupants slept.
Calvaire’s background presents a stark contrast to the allegations against him. He graduated from Florida Polytechnic University on May 8, 2022, with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, and appeared in a student video produced by the institution. University records show he held multiple campus leadership roles including Presidential Ambassador, resident assistant, and orientation leader, and maintained membership in several academic and professional organizations including Rotaract, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the IEEE-HKN academic honor society.
In his graduation remarks to the university, Calvaire reflected on his academic journey with evident pride. “Looking back, it’s been a childhood dream fulfilled. Since I was in elementary and middle school, I always dreamed of being in the tech field – or doing something related to tech and never really knowing if I had an affinity for it or knowing if it meshed well with my intrinsic skills or the skills I’m able to learn. Having gone through these four years, that’s the validation or confirmation of everything I was curious about,” he told the institution.
Calvaire also informed the university of his post-graduation plans, stating he intended to travel to North Carolina for a technology position with a major firm.
Jail records indicate Calvaire now faces one count each of burglary of an occupied dwelling and resisting an officer without violence. He remains held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with his bond listed as “to be set.”
