Cheap Prosthetic Arms Let Kids Become Characters From Disney, Star Wars and Marvel

An awesome collaboration between startup Open Bionics and Disney means that soon, children in need of prosthetic arms can take their pick from a range of princess- and superhero-themed arms.

The cheap, Iron Man-, Frozen-, and Star-Wars-inspired prosthetic arms are made using 3D printers and will be available next year for around $500.

But it’s the impact they have on children that’s most important: “The power of these prosthetics is that the public perception is completely different,” Open Bionics told the Independent.

“All of a sudden they’re not being asked how they lost their hand, they’re being asked where they got their cool robot hand, how does it feel, and how does it work?”

“It completely flips the perception 180 degrees. What might have been perceived as their greatest weakness is seen as their greatest strength.”
