The suspect in a grisly Oregon quintuple homicide was found dead by apparent suicide hours after firefighters discovered five bodies and slaughtered animals on a rural property, authorities said.
Benjamin Charles Parker, 36, was located dead inside a car in Enumclaw, Washington, a small city roughly 50 miles southwest of Seattle, police announced on Sunday. The discovery came the same day that emergency responders had stumbled upon the massacre scene outside Forest Grove, about 25 miles west of Portland.
Firefighters had been responding to a report of a vehicle fire just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday when they found the five bodies and “several” dead domesticated animals on the remote property, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. They immediately called in law enforcement to investigate the grim scene.
Washington County Detective Shannon Wilde said in a Sunday press conference that the case is being investigated as a “quintuple homicide.” Investigators do not believe the killings were a “random act,” Wilde added.
Parker knew the victims, though Sheriff Caprice Massey declined to specify how they were connected or whether a motive had been determined when speaking to reporters late Sunday. The identities of the five slain people have not been released, and authorities have not said whether the victims were related to one another.
Records indicate Parker had lived in the home where the bodies were found at one point, though it remained unclear whether he still resided there, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.
No details have been revealed about the manner in which the five people were murdered, or how the vehicle fire and dead animals are connected to the broader investigation.
Massey, who has led the department for more than two decades, addressed the complexity of the case directly.
“In my 22 years here, I have not been a part of or witnessed a scene quite this complex involving this type of an investigation,” Massey told reporters.
The sheriff also sought to reassure the shaken community as the investigation continues.
“I recognize that this incident is deeply concerning to our community. Our investigators are working to determine what happened, and we have dedicated every available resource to this case,” Massey said.
