Rob Reiner made history at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday with a posthumous win that also broke his father’s long-held record.
The late actor, 78, who died in December 2025, took home Best Guest Actor in a Comedy for his performance as Albert on FX’s “The Bear.” The 48 years between this trophy and his 1978 Supporting Actor win for “All in the Family” marks the longest gap between Emmy acting victories ever recorded.
That distinction previously belonged to his father, Carl Reiner, who waited 37 years between winning for “Caesar’s Hour” in 1958 and “Mad About You” in 1995. Rob’s win also represents the first posthumous Emmy for an on-camera performance since Raúl Julia received one for “The Burning Season” in 1995.
Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on Rob’s behalf during the non-televised ceremony, and audience members reportedly gave the moment a lengthy standing ovation.
News of Rob’s nomination had broken in July, with his three episodes of “The Bear” premiering in June — six months after he and wife Michele Reiner were murdered in their California residence. The couple’s youngest son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged in the slayings and has pleaded not guilty.
Social media users celebrated the honor widely. One fan wrote on X, “There’s something beautiful about an artist with a career that long still giving a performance worthy of being celebrated right at the end.”
Rob’s Emmy history stretches back nearly five decades. His 1978 win for “All in the Family” came during the peak of that groundbreaking sitcom’s run, where he played Michael Stivic opposite Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker. The show’s cultural footprint made him a household name long before his later career as a director of films including “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men.”
The Reiner family has now claimed father-son Emmy records across multiple generations. Carl Reiner’s own career spanned from early television with Sid Caesar through his recurring role on “Mad About You,” earning him a dozen Emmy wins total. The family’s comedy dynasty extends to Rob’s children as well.
Rob and Michele are survived by their other two children — son Jake, 35, and daughter Romy, 27 — plus Rob’s daughter Tracy from a previous relationship. The murder case against Nick Reiner continues to move through the courts.
A pre-trial hearing for the murder case is scheduled for Sept. 15.
