Sadie Sink has finally responded to the intense speculation surrounding her secret part in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but while she still isn’t revealing who she plays, she did shut down two major fan guesses.
The 24-year-old Stranger Things actor appeared in a fresh video shared on the movie’s official Instagram page on July 17, where she playfully acknowledged the growing theories that have spread since the film’s trailer and recent promotional push ramped up.
In the clip, Sink teased that she could reveal ‘three exclusive new details’ about the character she plays: she is not Spider-Man, she is not Aunt May, and she definitely appears in the film.
“As for who I really am… you’ll have to find out in the theater,” Sink concluded, leaving her actual role just as mysterious as before.
Her character has become one of the biggest unanswered questions tied to the film, especially with Marvel and Sony keeping her role out of the official marketing so far.
Among the most common fan predictions is the idea that Sink could be portraying X-Men character Jean Grey, with some viewers pointing to a hooded figure seen briefly in the latest footage.
That theory has only grown stronger because the movie’s official synopsis says Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will be fighting full-time in a New York City that no longer remembers Peter Parker, while a new threat to the city and those he loves appears to be a villain no one can even see.
Sink previously told Access Hollywood that she joined the film without an audition and without being given the script at first. She said she only received it after arriving in London to begin filming, suggesting the secrecy was meant to keep her role from leaking before the casting was officially locked in.
She also said that one reason the project felt like an easy yes was her existing connection with director Destin Daniel Cretton, having previously worked with him on 2017’s The Glass Castle.
“Cretton talked me through the character and what he had in mind and is obviously someone that I’d worked with before,” she said. “I was very comfortable. So that kind of made it a no-brainer for me.”
Even though she has been involved in the movie’s promotional run, Sink has not shown up in trailers or other marketing so far. She has admitted that the level of secrecy has made the press tour less than thrilling.
She said the experience has been ‘just kind of boring’ because she ‘can’t talk about anything,’ although she did mention that ‘a few people, just close family’, know the truth about her role.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently set to arrive in US theaters on July 31, with Hulk and Punisher also set to appear alongside Holland’s Spider-Man.
