Scientists reveal there’s a new rarest eye color that only 1% of the population has

Researchers have identified what they believe to be the newest and rarest eye color in humans. Typically, we recognize four primary colors of eyes: brown, blue, hazel, and green. For quite some time, green eyes held the title for rarity, making up about 2 percent of the global population and claiming the crown among eye colors. In a twist reminiscent of the power struggles in “House of the Dragon,” green’s long-standing reign is being challenged. But, in this real-world saga, the contender is not from House Black but from what could be dubbed House Grey. Unlike the fantastical series, this battle lacks dragons, which is probably for the better.

Previously grouped with blue eyes, grey eyes have now been reclassified as a distinct category on their own. If you’re someone with green eyes, you might feel slightly short-changed by this new classification. Meanwhile, those of us with brown eyes might feel like mere spectators to this elite rivalry. Blue follows, with 8 percent to 10 percent, similar to hazel, which also accounts for about 10 percent of the population worldwide. Both blue and hazel eyes trace back to a common ancestor. However, blue eyes appear more frequently in the United States, representing 27 percent of the population, compared to 18 percent for hazel eyes.

The newly dubbed rarest, grey eyes, make up less than 1 percent of both the U.S. and global populations. Often confused with blue due to their low melanin content, which absorbs longer wavelengths of light, grey eyes are distinct in their right.
