Dolly Parton honored her humble beginnings by recreating her childhood cabin at her Tennessee theme park.
The country icon, 78, grew up in a two-room log cabin in Locust Ridge in the Great Smoky Mountains, located outside Sevierville in east Tennessee. She shared the small residence with her parents and 11 siblings, making for a crowded but close-knit upbringing that would later shape her music and public persona.
The original cabin had just a kitchen and a single bedroom, with no electricity or running water to ease the family’s daily burdens. For nighttime visibility, the Parton children caught fireflies in jars and placed them throughout the home to illuminate the dark interior.
During Parton’s upbringing, the kitchen contained a table for six and a washing basin positioned between the kitchen and bedroom areas. Only a partial wall separated these living spaces, offering minimal privacy for the family of 14.
The home still stands today, though it remains closed to public access. Parton, however, ensured that fans could still experience her origins through a meticulous recreation at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Parton’s brother Bobby handled the design of the replica, while her mother, Avie Lee, offered her stamp of approval on the finished project. The collaboration kept the reconstruction firmly within the family that had once called the original structure home.
“These mountains and my childhood home have a special place in my heart,” reads a sign posted just outside the replica. “They inspire my music and my life. I hope being here does the same for you!”
The Dollywood cabin immerses visitors in Smoky Mountain life as the Parton family knew it during the 1940s and 1950s. The bedroom display features several beds standing side by side, with even a baby’s crib included among the sleeping arrangements.
The kitchen presents a more vibrant aesthetic than visitors might expect from such impoverished conditions. Floral wallpaper brightens the walls, while curtains hang on the windows and cast-iron skillets dangle from hooks. A standalone stove provided heating, and the eating space features wallpaper made from newspaper clippings with a table topped by a gas lamp.
In the viral moment that has drawn renewed attention to Parton’s origins, the replica’s cozy presentation stands in striking contrast to the crippling poverty the family actually endured. The display offers a glimpse into the happy family who resided inside despite their material hardships, reframing deprivation through the lens of familial warmth rather than mere struggle.
