Street Vendor Asks For Help After Car Destroys His Pizza Stand

Nicolas Valerio-Rodríguez

After a car slammed into his pizza stand in Echo Park, Nico’s Pizza owner, Nicolas Valerio-Rodríguez, has asked community members for help to bring back his family business.

He recalled a car approaching at high speed on Sunset Boulevard and crashing into his trailer. The impact was so great his stepson was thrown several feet from the collision’s impact.

“It was a big hit,” Valerio-Rodríguez said.

Fortunately, he was packing a fresh pizza to the side of the van and didn’t get injured when the car came barreling through.

However, his stepson suffered injuries all over his body and was rushed to the emergency room in serious condition. Another person was also severely injured in the crash, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Valerio-Rodríguez said his family was left jobless because of the pandemic, so they poured all their savings into setting up the small business.

“I’m so sad because I lost everything,” he said. “I worked so hard, so many years to save my money, try do my own business — but now it’s gone.”

He hopes community members will chip in to help him buy a new trailer and repair his pizza oven.

Friends of Valerio-Rodriguez set up a GoFundMe page to help bring back his pizza stand. They have raised over $17,000 as of this writing.
