Super-Fan Spends Six Years Crocheting Incredible Super Mario Bros Map Blanket

Native Norwegian Kjetil Nordin is what you’d call a video game fanatic. He spent over six years — more than 800 hours in total — crocheting a blanket version of the World 1 map from the classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game Super Mario Bros 3.

Even more impressive is the fact that he managed to earn two university degrees and start a career in the meantime. Oh yeah, and he also won the Norwegian Sky Diving team championship. Twice!

Check out the blanket in all its glory.

The project hit a snag when Kjetil used the wrong shade of purple for one section of the map and had to redo it. “That took an extra week,” he said.

The impressive creation measures about 2.2 by 1.8 meters, or 7 feet 2 inches by 5 feet 10 inches.

The blanket quickly garnered attention when posted to Reddit by Kjetil’s friend, Redditor AlexKingshill

Kjetil also makes small crotchet dolls for his family.

A few sharp-eyed commenters noticed some differences between the original Super Mario Bros 3 map and Kjetil’s blanket.

As it turns out, he patterned the map after the version that appears in Super Mario All-Stars, which featured a re-release version of the game with slightly different graphics.

Kjetil plans to frame the piece and mount it to a wall so that friends and family can enjoy his wonderful art.

The level of detail in the piece is marvelous.

Mario himself would surely approve.
