They’ve been hanging around the house for decades, but before you chuck all your ancient Disney VHS tapes in the trash, you might want to check they’re not worth a small fortune.
Rare editions of the most valuable Disney VHS, Beauty and the Beast, have sold for as much as $9,000 on eBay, with others valued between $1,000 and $10,000.
Collectors covet these classic movies and have their beady eyes out for certain editions, unusual artwork, collectibles, rare defects, and limited-edition tapes cleverly added by Disney to make the videos collectible (and it definitely worked!).
Keep an eye out for the black diamond on the VHS case reading “Disney Classics”; it represents a specific edition of the VHS and this logo alone can make the tapes worth up to $250.
Other tapes might feature the black diamond with the words “A Walt Disney Classic” and Disney’s signature, which — depending on the condition — can be worth thousands to collectors.
This edition of The Little Mermaid sold for $6,000 as it featured artwork that was later banned (one of the palace’s turrets were said to look a bit too rude…).
And if you remember singing your heart out to the song “Human Again” that was cut from later VHS editions of Beauty and the Beast, you could be sitting on a goldmine.
We bet all you spring cleaners are kicking yourself for throwing those ancient tapes out now…
