Teen Girl, 14, Plunges from Waterfall to Her Death While Taking Selfies

A 14-year-old girl tragically lost her life after getting trapped between rocks off a waterfall while attempting to take selfies.

The teenager, identified as Moe Sa Nay, was visiting the Sinywa Waterfall in Paung, Myanmar, with a friend on July 22 when the accident occurred.

After slipping, Moe was quickly swept away by the strong current and became lodged between two large boulders.

Since she was unable to free herself, it is believed that she drowned.

Her friend also slipped but managed to avoid getting trapped and only sustained minor injuries.

Moe was reportedly taking selfies for her TikTok page, which had 150,000 followers.

Despite rescue efforts, footage from the scene highlights the difficulty in recovering Moe’s body.

One of the rescue workers described the challenging situation.

“She died because she couldn’t get out. They tried to rescue her but couldn’t pull her out. Then the aid organizations and officials came.”

Video footage of the rescue attempt showed how rapidly the waterfall water was flowing and the difficulty in locating and retrieving Moe’s body. Rescuers were seen tying her hands with rope in hopes of pulling her out.

After successfully retrieving her, the teenager’s body was taken to Paung Township General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Incidents involving injuries or deaths as a result of taking pictures have become increasingly common.

In 2022, a tourist fell into the crater of Mount Vesuvius after attempting to take a selfie on a forbidden route.

Italian media reported at the time that the 23-year-old and his family from the US ignored warning signs and walked on an out-of-bounds path.

While on this prohibited route, the man tried to take a selfie at the summit of the volcano, which led to a dangerous situation.

As he stood at the summit of the iconic Naples landmark, he dropped his phone and fell while trying to retrieve it.

Fortunately for the tourist, the incident wasn’t fatal, and he walked away with only cuts and bruises on his arms and back.
