A construction worker died in Texas after a house under construction collapsed on top of him during intense winds and storms Thursday.
Travis County Emergency Services confirmed the fatality on Friday morning. Four workers were at the site when winds between 50 and 70 mph struck the area.
Two of the workers managed to escape as the structure was giving way. The entire two-story home came down, trapping two others who could not get out in time.
One of the trapped workers remained awake and breathing while pinned under framework of the house. The other sustained severe injuries and did not survive.
“The neighbor next to the house reported that the winds were so intense,” Travis County Emergency Services District 5 said. “The trees were blowing sideways, and then she heard a loud boom which was the house collapsing next to her.”
Wind reports in the region recorded gusts of 60 mph on Thursday afternoon during the storms. The severe weather system brought dangerous conditions across the area as the workers labored on the unfinished structure.
The surviving trapped worker was extracted after crews lifted the collapsed framework. Officials did not immediately release the names of those involved.
The incident drew response from multiple agencies as crews worked to free the pinned worker and recover the body of the deceased. The construction site became a scene of emergency operations amid continuing severe weather in the region.
The fatality occurred as Central Texas experienced significant storm activity, with high winds posing particular danger to exposed structures and outdoor workers.
