CUPS Coffee & Tea in Virginia, US, decided that the prices for rude people and the prices for polite people needed adjusting, so they put this sign outside.
That’s right, if you can manage to greet the server AND say, “please”, you can enjoy a coffee for just $1.75.
But if you march in and bark, “Small coffee!” you’ll be paying the Rude Tax, bringing your total to $3.
Austin Simms, who wrote the sign, admitted that they didn’t actually charge the different prices, but it was an inspired way to make people be nicer in fear that they’d have to pay extra.
“I decided, because I need to solve all the injustices of the world, to start charging more for people didn’t take the time to say hello and connect and realize we’re all people behind the counter.”
And according to store owner Olivia, there’s been a huge increase in customer politeness since the sign went up. Success!
