Lady Gaga has welcomed her first child with fiancé Michael Polansky, surprising fans who never saw a pregnancy announcement coming.
The 39-year-old singer, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was photographed in Northern California last week wearing an oversized cardigan and sweatpants with her hair in a blond bun, a neutral-colored baby sling strapped across her chest. Tech entrepreneur Polansky, 47, walked ahead in a cap, hoody, shorts and flip-flops, according to images obtained by photographers.
The couple, who began dating in 2019 and got engaged in 2024, had given no public indication they were expecting through pregnancy, surrogacy or adoption. Gaga’s social media presence had dwindled dramatically in recent months, with grainy polaroids in August marking her first posts in months. She also skipped the 2026 Met Gala entirely and had not been seen publicly since the New York premiere of The Devil Wear Prada 2 in April, shortly after her Mayhem Ball world tour concluded.
Even those in her inner circle were left guessing about her whereabouts. A source said before the baby news broke that “no one has seen her or heard from her in over a month,” adding that friends suspected she had “eloped with Michael and is on her honeymoon now, trying to make a baby.”
Gaga had been laying low in Marin County, California, where reports indicated she and Polansky were building a quiet life away from the spotlight.
The “Poker Face” singer had not hidden her desire for motherhood. During an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in October, she made her priorities unmistakably clear.
“I would like to do many things,” she said. “All of these things are open. But what I really want is to be a mom. That’s my next starring role, I hope.”
Polansky echoed that family-focused outlook in an interview the same year, revealing the couple had been discussing marriage during breaks in Gaga’s Mayhem Tour.
“We’re talking about it all the time,” he said. He added that they didn’t want “a really big wedding” and had been thinking carefully about how to raise children amid fame. Referencing Gaga’s godchildren, Elton John and David Furnish’s sons, he continued: “The most important thing is making it feel like this is just our family, this is what we do.”
Gaga also addressed her future approach to parenting in an interview with ELLE in January 2025, months before retreating from public view.
“I would want my children to understand that whatever my artistry means to them is totally up to them,” she said.
She added that she would “never actually want to shape it or tell them how to think about me.”
The Grammy-winning pop star delivered an emotional farewell on the final night of her Mayhem Ball tour, thanking her fans for their support through the run of shows. That performance now appears to have marked the end of a chapter, with motherhood following swiftly behind.
