Frankie Muniz broke his silence about hitting “rock bottom” in a raw Instagram post Friday that left fans worried about the former child star.
The “Malcolm in the Middle” alum, 39, wrote that the past six weeks have been a “nightmare” he is desperate to escape. “Everything felt heavy, unclear, and like it was falling apart at the same time,” Muniz shared on Instagram. “I wouldn’t wish this season on anyone.”
The Arizona-based actor’s emotional disclosure comes as he juggles a crumbling marriage, a demanding racing schedule, and a return to the sitcom that made him famous. His wife of four years, Paige Price, 32, announced their split on July 1 after a decade together. The couple share 5-year-old son Mauz.
A source familiar with Muniz’s situation said that the divorce has taken a severe toll. “He’s getting a divorce and he was trying to keep it cordial,” the source said. “I think it was all a lot for him and contributed to his marriage falling apart. He did a lot to try and make it work for her.”
The logistics alone were brutal. The source described Muniz waking at 3 a.m. In Arizona to catch flights to Concord, North Carolina, where he would grind through simulator sessions and shop time before flying back home late the same night. He made that punishing round trip roughly twice weekly on top of actual race travel and his “Malcolm in the Middle” filming commitments.
His racing results this year have compounded the pressure. “He hasn’t done well in racing this year,” the source claimed. “He’s struggling in the truck series, but he’s done well in another racing series.” The uncertainty around his NASCAR trajectory cuts especially deep given that professional racing has been his dream since childhood.
Muniz first raced as a celebrity contestant in 2004, then competed professionally in open wheel from 2006 to 2009. He stepped away before mounting his comeback in 2021, finally making his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut this year.
Price responded to her estranged husband’s public anguish with her own opaque message on social media Friday. “Life is all about perspective. If you ask the grass, the zebra is the monster and the lion is the protector,” she wrote, posting alongside a video of herself crafting a wax seal.
The pair wed in February 2020 following a 2018 engagement. Their separation marks the end of a relationship that spanned Muniz’s entire return to competitive racing and his push to establish himself in NASCAR’s national ranks.
Despite the personal chaos, Muniz is scheduled to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Kansas Speedway next Saturday.
