Tiger Woods made a rare public appearance in a pre-recorded video that left fans sharply divided over his physical condition.
The 50-year-old golf legend surfaced Tuesday in a tribute clip for the Payne Stewart Award ceremony honoring retired golfer Notah Begay, 52, his longtime friend. The video marked one of Woods’ few public sightings since his March DUI arrest in Jupiter Island, Florida, and his subsequent extended stay at a rehab facility in Switzerland.
Viewers on X immediately seized on Woods’ appearance, with reactions ranging from alarm to reassurance. “Tiger looks a shell of his former self,” one user wrote. “He looks very different,” another added. A third commenter claimed he “looked spaced out.”
Others pushed back hard against the criticism. “Clearly sober here. Nice to see,” a defender wrote. “Wow, Tiger looks great,” a fourth supporter gushed. Additional fans told critics that Woods looked “normal” and “healthy.”
In the video itself, Woods spoke directly to Begay about their decades-long friendship. “Hey, Notah. It’s been an unbelievable ride with you. You first came into my life when I was 11 years old, playing in the junior world and you came to watch me play. Our friendship has started there and never ended,” he said.
Woods praised Begay’s professional accomplishments, noting he won “four times on tour” and “playing in the President’s Cup.” The tribute then pivoted to Begay’s off-course work with Native American communities.
“But to see what you’ve done off the course and for your local Native American communities, you’ve helped over 80,000 youths and their families, which is absolutely incredible,” Woods continued. “I just think more people need to know what you’ve done and how you’ve served, and you’ve given back to the tribal lands and what you have done,” he added, noting that “there are so many people out there who are struggling in those communities.”
The appearance came after Woods pleaded not guilty on March 31 to charges from his March arrest, when officers in Jupiter Island claimed he showed “signs of impairment” following a rollover accident. Woods refused a urinary test but blew a negative breathalyzer. Officers later found “two white pills” in his pocket, identified as hydrocodone, a narcotic pain reliever.
Woods flew to Switzerland on April 3 for rehab treatment, staying on and off until mid-June. The facility stay represented his latest attempt to manage the pain and dependency issues that have plagued him since multiple back surgeries and a devastating 2021 car crash.
Following his return, an insider said that Woods was under a “great deal of stress.” The source added that his golf comeback remained uncertain but personally urgent. “I don’t know when it will be or how he will do it, but Tiger is determined to return [to golf],” the insider said. “He has to get his pain management going in the right direction and also be able to continue a fitness routine, which will help him do the best he can when seriously playing golf. This could be tough. But it’s something he wants.”
Throughout his rehab stay, Woods maintained his relationship with girlfriend Vanessa Trump, 47, who revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in May. The couple’s relationship became public earlier this year, adding another personal dimension to Woods’ complicated private life as he navigated legal and health challenges simultaneously.

His last competitive appearance came in 2024, and he has not completed a full tournament since.
