A mother of two met a tragic end in an unusual accident during a cycling race last month.
The incident occurred as competitors were sprinting towards the finish line at the event on July 28.
Footage captured by a spectator shows a cyclist moving too close in front of Jaiane Souza Oliveira Fernandes after overtaking her.
This maneuver caused Jaiane, 34, to veer into a sound truck that was parked on the race track in Baianópolis, north of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The collision with the truck caused a speaker stack to topple onto her.
Another cyclist also hit the sound truck and was knocked off their bike but did not suffer any injuries.
Medics at the scene quickly administered first aid to Jaiane and transported her to a local hospital, where she was in critical condition. Unfortunately, she passed away shortly after due to head injuries.
When police inspectors arrived to investigate, the sound truck had already been removed from the scene.
Jaiane was an avid cyclist and frequently participated in local cycling competitions. She leaves behind a husband, who also participated in the event, and twin sons.
The organizers, Dubai Bikers, shared on social media: “The loss of this special person leaves a deep void in our hearts. May her memories and legacy bring comfort and strength.”
Her funeral, which was attended by many fellow cyclists, took place in Luís Eduardo Magalhães the day after her passing on July 29.
Seventy cyclists from various cities attended the event, as reported by local radio station Cultura 104.
An Instagram video shows cyclists riding behind Jaiane’s coffin.
Condolences and prayers have been pouring in for Jaiane’s family.
“My heart aches knowing that there will be a void in the hearts of the children that will never be filled,” one person wrote online.
“May God comfort the hearts of all family and friends, especially children,” said another.
One person who appeared to know Jaiane personally wrote: “Loved by everyone forever, thank you for being light in everyone’s lives, I love you my eternal sister in soul and heart.”
The police in Baianópolis are currently investigating the case.
