President Donald Trump says a 16-year-old lifeguard will be invited to the White House to receive a High Civilian Honor after dramatic footage showed him fighting through huge waves to pull a young boy to safety.
The incident took place over the weekend at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, where beach conditions shifted suddenly and left people on the shore stunned.
A boy thought to be about 10 years old was carried into deeper water after powerful swells began crashing along the beach.

While people watched helplessly from land, the teenage lifeguard, named on social media as Ryder, rushed into the rough surf without hesitation.
Video filmed by witness Scott Vander Dussen shows the rescue unfolding in real time. Ryder pushes through the heavy waves, reaches the child, and keeps hold of him as both are battered by repeated walls of whitewater.

“The waves, I wouldn’t say they were tranquil, but they were what you’d expect, a normal cadence and intensity,” witness Vander Dussen explained. “And then that just changed in a heartbeat. It caught a lot of people off guard. Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time.”
The ocean conditions were so severe that others on the beach struggled to help. A number of adults tried to get into the water, but the force of the surf kept throwing them back.
Authorities and local media said the surf along the Santa Cruz coastline had been unusually dangerous, with powerful sets and rip currents making even shallow water hazardous. California State Parks lifeguards said the busy beach day produced dozens of rescues across the area, underscoring how quickly conditions can turn on the Northern California coast.
Ryder was eventually able to get assistance from another lifeguard and nearby beachgoers, and together they brought the boy back to shore. Emergency responders checked the child at the scene before he was reunited with his family.
As the clip spread widely online and drew millions of views, it also reached the Trump family. Eric Trump was among those to reshare it, saying the teen should be honored nationally and describing the rescue as “truly the best of America”.
On Tuesday, Trump said the teenager would be formally recognized by the White House.
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor,” Trump posted. “Very brave, he deserves it!”
Following the surge of attention, a woman who said she is Ryder’s mother shared a message publicly thanking people for their support, adding that her son “was just doing the job that he absolutely loves”.
According to witnesses, once the boy had been handed over to paramedics, Ryder ran back past his lifeguard tower and resumed watching the water, finishing the rest of his shift on the beach.
