The fabricated video, which spread rapidly across X last weekend, spliced together two unrelated moments from the September 27 ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. It showed Swift, 34, on stage delivering an award presentation immediately followed by a reaction shot of Charli XCX, 32, seated in the audience with a neutral expression and slow clap. The implication that the “Brat” singer was responding directly to Swift’s remarks triggered a wave of online criticism.
The footage was entirely manipulated. X’s own AI agent later flagged the post, noting that Charli XCX’s reaction was filmed during Nirvana’s Video Vanguard Award speech, not Swift’s presentation. The parody account @petaltrin, which originally shared the edited clip, carries a label identifying it as satirical content.
Swifties and Charli XCX fans alike have since joined forces to debunk the misinformation. One viewer who watched the broadcast live fired back on X: “Girl this is edited…she did this for another artist, I wus literally watching all of Taylor’s speech and the camera didn’t pan to Charli ONCE…yall need to chile…”
Another user added: “I don’t like charli Xbox but this clip is edited, don’t spread fake news!”
The pile-on against Charli XCX had grown intense before the edit was exposed. A third defender wrote: “You know this is edited right? And that you are posting just to create more hate??? Please go out and touch some grass.”
A fourth commenter expressed exhaustion at the manufactured conflict, writing: “Why do they do s**t like this… it’s so weird. My god it’s rough being a charli and taylor fan in 2026/”
The genuine footage of Charli XCX’s actual reaction during Nirvana’s Vanguard honor has since circulated as proof of the clip’s manipulation. The British pop star had taken the stage herself earlier in the evening as a presenter before joining the audience for the remainder of the show.
Some supporters also pointed to a simpler explanation for the expression captured in the authentic footage. The source noted defenders raising the possibility that Charli XCX was merely displaying what many recognize as a resting expression rather than any emotional response to the Nirvana tribute.

Swift’s speech that was falsely attached to the reaction clip focused on her creative process behind music videos. “The reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because the fans make it so much fun,” she said from the stage.
